The DuPont Spruance manufacturing site sits along the James River in Richmond, Virginia. Built in 1929 to produce Rayon®, today Spruance is the largest DuPont manufacturing facility in the world.
Spruance employs more than 2,000 people, many of which are second and third-generation employees. It is one of the largest employers in Chesterfield County.
The site produces a wide range of consumer safety and protection products as well as solutions for the military, homeland security and law enforcement. Throughout its history, the Spruance site has supported countless non-profit organizations in the Richmond area through charitable giving and employee volunteerism.

At Dupont, our mission is to drive positive change globally by making a difference locally. Through our community impact, we're inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, technicians and innovators, engaging our employees in their communities through volunteerism, and supporting communities to ensure they thrive. To that end, the Spruance manufacturing site recently announced the recipients of its 2021 charitable giving awards that will make a positive and notable impact on the Richmond-area community.

Spruance Volunteers Team Up with World U.P. Foundation on Mobile Food Pantry
Members of Spruance’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) recently volunteered at a World U.P. Foundation Mobile Food Pantry build. The volunteers helped construct a mobile food pantry by fitting a trailer with a refrigeration unit, shelving and ample storage for fresh fruits and vegetables.
When the mobile food pantry is attached to a truck it can transport fresh produce to different locations in the Richmond area to increase food security and the community’s access to nutrient-rich foods.
The World U.P. Foundation is based in Richmond, Virginia and is focused on promoting peaceful diversity and universal understanding by improving access to cross-cultural education and experiences. In 2019 World U.P. received a grant for its work in providing fresh produce to the hungry in the Richmond, Virginia area from the Spruance site.
Spruance Supports STEM with Chesterfield Education Foundation
Spruance employees recently delivered the site’s support of the Chesterfield Education Foundation’s (CEF) STEM-related projects via an education grant for classroom innovation. The grant will go toward helping a number of projects, including robotics, coding and 3-D printing workstations.
The Chesterfield Education Foundation was funded in 1989 to advance student achievement in Chesterfield County Public Schools.
Spruance Reps Attend Sacred Heart Center Art Exhibition
Sacred Heart Center is a Richmond non-profit that is supported by the Spruance manufacturing site. The Center provides programs for area Latino families, including adult education, literacy classes, employment opportunities and youth activities. Spruance representatives recently attended an art exhibition of Sacred Heart’s young artists.
“The children’s projects were various forms of art and they were terrific,” said Elizabeth Jones, Spruance’s HR Manager. “I was very impressed with the Sacred Heart Center. The work they are doing with their adult and youth programs are truly inspirational.”
In 2019 Sacred Heart Center received a grant to help with its after school programs from Spruance.
